Hillcrest is an urban neighborhood with an artistic vibe located northeast of downtown San Diego and bordered by Mission Hills to the northwest, Bankers Hill and Balboa Park to the south, and University Heights and North Park to the east.  It is known for it's commitment to locally-owned businesses, including restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs, trendy thrift-stores, and other independent specialty stores.

Hillcrest has a high population density and has a high level of pedestrian activity.  This is a neighborhood for people who put a high priority to being able to easily walk to desirable shops and services.  The homes in Hillcrest range from high-rise apartments and condominiums to single-family detached homes.  It is an older San Diego neighborhood, so among the homes are many noted for their Craftsman or Spanish-style architecture.  On average, lot sizes tend to be smaller than in most San Diego neighborhoods.

Points of Interest nearby are, Balboa Park, Presidio, and Old Town.  Hillcrest and Mission Hills are home to Scripps Mercy Hospital and the UCSD Medical Center.

The Presidio is located a few miles west of Hillcrest.

Balboa Park is walking distance from Hillcrest and is home to 13 museums.
